The Worlington Photographic Group

The Group came into existence in January 2007 in response to a request for a photographic exhibition to be displayed as a part of an Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Worlington in the following September. Photography has featured in the annual Church fete for many years and the person who was organising it asked those who had participated to be involved. That group of 18 put on an exhibition of 54 prints in a very short time. At the end many of those who had participated ask if they could continue to meet on a regular basis to improve their work and we have continued to meet monthly ever since.

Our meetings are of a varied nature covering much of photography. In the 5 years that we have been meeting digital has taken over and everybody in the Group now has a digital camera. We, therefore, concentrate on the digital aspect and have been much involved in getting people to understand their cameras and how to use them so as to get the best out of them. After a couple of years the initial Group was finding it difficult to maintain enthusiasm and it was then that we successfully applied for a grant from the National Lottery which was awarded to us in February 2010.

The grant enabled us to buy 8 computers running the Adobe Photoshop Elements v8 image manipulation program, a high definition digital projector and an A3 printer.
For the next year we concentrated on teaching our members how to use the equipment to improve their pictures and set a goal of presenting another exhibition at the end of the year to acknowledge the support of the National Lottery to our community and to thank them for the grant. The pictures that were exhibited by four working groups totalling 14 persons are shown on this site, each group having decided on its own theme.

We still continue to teach people how to use their cameras and image manipulation software and we have increased our membership as a consequence. The completion of the grant requirements in the first year has allowed us to revert back to a rather more varied program and we have, for instance, introduced outings to photographically varied sites to expand our abilities. The current program can be seen on this site and further details can be obtained from our secretary, Mr G. T. Brown on 01884 861268.

Membership of the Group is now nearly 20 and is free but an attendance fee (currently of £3) is charged for each of the evening meetings on the third Tuesday of each month except December. This pays the expenses of hiring and heating the venue, insurance for the Group’s activities and the maintenance of its equipment. Anybody interested in joining us will be very welcome.
